"I assure you your mother will come," I said, stopping my teeth from chattering as I said that. I hate lying to my son since I know it won't actually happen, but this is the only thing that will calm him down, which becomes less and less effective as time passes.
"I want to return to my mommy, so please let me go home," I saw tears in my son's eyes as he uttered those words, and I couldn't help but feel hurt since I knew he was suffering. Seven days have passed, and it appears that my empty promises are no longer effective.
"However, Caleb, this is already your home, and I am your dad; do you want me to buy you more toys?" Even though I couldn't help but panic, I tried to calm him down.
"I'm going back to mommy," he said, sobbing.
I didn't know how to soothe him, so I just held him tightly, as if he would lose his desire to be with his mother. This is how to be a father; it hurts more to watch your child in pain.
