Prologue
I nervously played with the end of my dupatta as I waited for my husband to come into the room. It was our wedding night, and many thoughts raced through my mind. Would he be kind or forceful? Would he respect me and my choices? The big question in my mind was, "Will I ever experience love and respect in my life?"
Just as I was consumed by these thoughts, the door swung open loudly, revealing my handsome yet angry husband.
The sound of the door locking echoed in the room. Avoiding eye contact, I focused on fidgeting with the end of my dupatta in my lap. I could feel his glare at me as his footsteps got closer. Each step made my heart pound harder.
Suddenly, without any warning, I found myself falling from the bed to the floor. As I looked up, trying to understand what had just happened, it was clear that my husband had forcefully thrown me down on our wedding night.
I winced from both emotional pain and physical discomfort as I stood up. I gazed at him, hoping for an explanation behind his actions.
His words shattered my world and broke my heart into pieces. All the dreams I had of a life filled with love and mutual respect were destroyed.
"Listen, this marriage was forced on me, and the only reason I agreed to marry you was because my mother wanted me to. I've met girls like you who only want my money and are called gold diggers.
You just married me for my money and reputation. I couldn't marry the person I wanted to because of you. I couldn't marry Ayesha because of you. Now you'll regret marrying me! Don't touch anything that belongs to me because nothing here belongs to you. It all belongs to Ayesha.
Also, the title you gave my wife is something that only Ayesha has. So remember that. Don't expect anything from me or this marriage, and don't say anything to my parents, or you'll see the worst of me!" He said that and slammed the door behind him as he went to the toilet.
Tears flowed from my eyes like a waterfall. Three things shattered my world, my husband's love for someone else, his decision to end our relationship on our wedding night, and the fact that my mother was right—I was a bad omen, unable to earn anyone's love.
I felt worthless. I knew I would never receive love or respect in my life, but this marriage had given me some hope. His words shattered that hope. Today should have been one of the best days of a girl's life, but I was broken. I was shattered into pieces.
