Chapter 117. Nightmares

Eryn’s POV

“Mommy,” Marcus screams in the middle of the night.

I jump out of bed as fast as my pregnant belly will allow and waddle down the hallway. I push open the door to find Marcus sobbing in his racecar bed.

“Hey, buddy,” I coo. “Did you have a bad dream?”

Marcus nods and sloppily wipes his tears away. “The bad daddy was coming to get you again.”

My forehead wrinkles with concern. Over the past few months, Marcus has started calling Atticus the nice daddy and Theo the bad daddy. He doesn’t mention his mother. I fear that he has tucked her away in his mind, and one day, he will no longer remember her.

He spends Wednesday afternoons with a counselor, trying to sort through the very big emotions in his little mind. We don’t push him for details unless he wants to talk about it. It is a difficult line to walk, but Atticus and I are trying our best.
