I was in pain.

Not the kind that left visible wounds or demanded blood to heal—this pain sat deeper, lodged firmly in my chest, dull and persistent. It was the kind of ache that came from letting go of something you loved, not because you wanted to, but because you had to. And no matter how old a vampire gets, no matter how many centuries pass, that kind of pain never dulls with time.

Still, I couldn’t let Elizabeth see it.

Elizabeth had always been impulsive, led by emotion when her heart was involved. If she sensed even a fraction of what I was feeling—if she saw how badly losing her hurt me—she might make a decision she’d regret. She might reject her mate for me. And I couldn’t allow that.
