Apphia’s POV
“I have huge shoes to fill,” I murmur.
“I’m sure you’ll do well,” he says confidently. “Have you thought about my proposition?”
I glance up at him, and he’s looking at me intently.
“I don’t know if I trust you, Maximus. What are you hoping to gain from our alliance?”
“As I said, making alliances in our world is essential. It offers political standing, Crisis support, and others. I’d have your back, and you mine,” he says smoothly, looking me in the eye.
“And my mate? Why didn’t you make him this offer?” I ask. He makes a sour face and shakes his head.
“I tried once, but he refused; they all do. I told Apphia, they don’t like us,” he says through gritted teeth.
I feel for him. It will take a lot of effort to be truly accepted and recognized as a proper pack after being shunned for years.
