Chapter 48. You’ve Got the Job

As I felt such unease, I took a few slow, deep breaths while Devon waited for me to speak. When people questioned me about myself, I was always so uncomfortable and awkward. I didn’t feel like I had anything insightful to contribute to the conversation. My preference was to answer questions, rather than talk about myself.

However, Devon was the one who inquired of me, and I was apprehensive about letting him know about my true identity. What for? He is getting married, and he broke his promise that he’d look for me, four years ago.

I let out an exasperated sigh of disappointment. I don’t have a choice except to open myself to him, but I guess I have to lie about other things. For the sake of providing for my family, I need to start a job immediately, and this was my only option. I had no choice but to go through this despite how uncomfortable it made me feel.

“What are you waiting for?”

“Uhm… I… ah… I’m Michelle Rivers, twenty-four-year-old…” I
