Chapter 70. I Would Be Free at Last
Layla’s POV
I didn’t look back.
Not even once.
I stepped out of the pool area with my heart hammering in my chest, hands forming tight fists by my side.
I hated that he caught me. I hated that he touched me. I hated that for just a second my body hesitated to pull away.
I was cold, wet, angry.
And then in pain.
The sharp twist of my ankle came out of the blue and sent a bolt up my leg. There was hardly time for my mind to register the pain before my body lurched forward. My hands shot out towards saving myself, but the smoothness of the tiles betrayed me.
A choked gasp escaped my mouth when I hit the ground, the impact sending another wave of pain through me. Instantly throbbed my ankle, a deep throbbing ache that made my stomach turn.
I sucked a deep breath into my lungs and pressed my palm against the floor, trying to push myself up. The moment I put weight on my foot, white-hot pain shot through me, stealing my breath.<
