Layla’s POV
Full of doubt, the words hung between us.
“I don’t have an answer for that.”
For once, he could not provide witty excuses or smooth lines. Just plain uncertainty was all he could give me. There should have been joy dancing in my heart. But no, it was something quite different, Disgust.
It started gradually, turning and twisting, with slow supper sickness in my stomach. This same man, cautious and remorseful before me, who had already done more than enough damage to my life in multiple ways, expected me to care.
