Chapter 19. Reassurance
MAVIS
I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins as I hurried after Estelle. I knew I couldn’t let her out of my sight, not even for a moment. The thought of her whispering something to Isabel was too much to bear.
I had known that Isabel and Estelle didn’t have a history together, so it was odd to see them chatting and laughing as if they were old friends. I felt a pang of jealousy, and I couldn’t help but wonder what they were talking about.
Maybe they were just being polite, but something about their interaction felt off. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was going on behind the scenes.
I had to follow her down the hall, through the lobby, and out the front door. I watched her get into a car and drive away before I felt at ease.
I walked out and had someone fetch the gatekeeper. He walked toward me looking worried. “Sir,” he bowed. “You sent for me.”
Ignoring his greetings, I ordered him to look up. “Why did you let in Estel
