Chapter 105
I didn't always remember which version of a sad story I invented for people. Lany knew the same as Beatrice, by the way. The story that I had left home because I had controlling parents and that even from afar they kept sending me messages to ask for money. Of course it was a lie. And of course I didn't always remember to support the same version more than once.
"Well, if it's any consolation... "I gestured with my shoulders, keeping my hands in my coat pockets. "I still have a job, but it's not enough for my accounts.”
"I would even tell you to get out of there, but I understand that it's hard for us like us to get something else," Lany said in a sad tone. "People insist on saying that slavery is over, but don't they really get real? The difference is that now even whites are being enslaved. That will never change. And for black people, like us, the situation seems to only get worse. Did you hear about the kid who died because of police officers this morning, Tas?”
