Ryder POV
I was twelve again.
The floor was cold and sticky beneath my bare feet. The metallic smell of blood filled my lungs, thick and suffocating. My parents lay motionless in front of me, their bodies twisted in a dark, glistening pool of blood that spread across the marble like spilled ink.
“Mom… Dad…” My voice came out small, trembling.
Then their eyes snapped open.
They rose slowly, jerkily, like broken puppets pulled by invisible strings. Blood soaked their clothes, dripped from their hair, ran down their faces in thick rivulets. Their eyes were wide, unnaturally large, glowing with something inhuman. Their lips peeled back into grotesque smiles, teeth flashing red.
“You killed us,” my mother whispered, her voice distorted, echoing.
My father took a step forward, leaving bloody footprints. “Why did you kill us, Ryder?”
I stumbled backward, falling hard onto the floor. “I didn’t! It was a mistake! I didn’t mean to—”
