“Are you okay?” I asked, holding Evolet closely while hanging onto a narrow window ledge outside the throne room. My arms were wrapped securely around her, but I could still feel the tremors running through her body. Her wolf was fighting to stay calm—her necklace, still unfixed, was barely restraining the surge of power that pulsed just beneath her skin.
She nodded and offered a small smile. “Yeah, I’m good,” she said, her voice light but brave. She lifted her head to meet my gaze, and when our eyes locked, I momentarily forgot the danger surrounding us.
Her eyes were still glowing—wild and ethereal—because of the broken pendant. It wasn’t safe to let them stay that way for too long, not while Chriselda’s guards were swarming the palace. There hadn’t been a second to fix it. We’d barely managed to escape the room before the soldiers came crashing in.
