“That woman? Ah Geez,” Derby groaned, folding her arms and leaning against the cave wall with an expression that made it clear she’d rather face a dozen rogue wolves than that particular Vampire queen. “You’re talking about the Queen of Fangs, Scarlet? You’re dreaming if you think she’ll even pause to hear you out.”
Trent had his own thoughts—grim ones. He crossed his arms, jaw tightening. “I don’t like vampires. Never have. They’re always watching, never blinking. You think you’re one step ahead, and then you’re bleeding before you even notice they moved.”
Only Mom kept calm. She was always the voice of grounded wisdom in our group. “Are you sure there’s a chance in convincing that Queen?” she asked, gently but firmly, her eyes scanning mine for doubt.
