And someone’s voice said, “We will not be able to enter her through the flames. Take her from here. She is bleeding.”
Manar shouted, “The little one is upstairs alone, my brothers, do not leave them.”
Manar’s voice disappeared and I no longer listened to him. I saw a path down that had not been touched by the flames and I began to look for Iman with my eyes until I found her lying on the ground in a pool of blood. I quickly got down trying to avoid the flames as I passed by the bodies of men lying on the ground until I approached them, but the smoke almost drowned them out. It suffocated me, but I resisted the feeling of losing my focus with what they tried, and I grabbed Iman’s body, trying to pull her away from the fire. I felt her slight movement with me, then I heard her whisper.
“Didn’t I tell you not to get out from under the bed?”
I told her, “The fire will consume everything. We will die together.”
