The silence that followed her announcement would have been comical but for the tension emanating from her husband, who gripped her, his hard hands tightening around her upper arms till she let out an involuntary whimper.

‘Woman?’ he growled thickly, his voice urgent and pleading, disbelief etched on the craggy features,
