Chapter 158. Six Feet Under

The crack of the gun in the distance fades as I continue to run. I don’t know where I’m going except for south as fast as I can. I’m running over snow-covered ground, sliding down hills, trying to get away from them and closer to my own pack mates so that I can use the mind-link to try to reach out for help.
I am at the top of a very large mountain, and I don’t have a lot of experience navigating ice-covered terrain. I need to slow down to make sure that I don’t fall, but I can sense them coming after me. I believe they’ve all shifted now to chase me, so it’s not like they should be able to shoot at me. Wolves do not have thumbs, after all….
I try to look ahead of where I’m going so that I don’t do something stupid like plunge off a cliff, but my feet get twisted up on a large rock, and the next thing I know, I’m tumbling.
The snow is deep enough that I’m not even making contact with the smaller rocks and bushes beneath the ground coverin
