Chapter 38. Stranger Danger

The house is quiet, echoing only the sound of chirping birds and rustling leaves outside. The windows have been covered by brown transparent curtains, which allow dim light to pass through. The brown wooden enclave is trailed by a whiff of the burning wood in the fireplace while the warmth spread by this comforts me.
I sit on the little bed, staring blankly at the window. Having eaten to my fill, it’s almost hard to believe that two days have passed since I last saw my father. His words and presence remain imprinted in my mind as I ponder on what to do next.
“The Stone Men,” I mumble, as his words replay in my head. Just then, the sound of the rickety door creeping open pulls me out of my thoughts. I grab a knife from the kitchen table and proceed to hide by the wall in a darker corner, peering at the entrance to decipher this imminent threat.
