“Let Ethan stand up for me?” Clara paused for a second. “But she’s Mr. Webb’s daughter. And Mr. Webb’s been with Ethan for years… kind of like family.”

That’s why she didn’t dare bring it up with Ethan.

Lilah said, “Clara, let me tell you straight—no matter how long they’ve been around, Ethan pays them to work for him. They’re employees. But you, you’re family. You’re the one who holds the weight in that house. I know Ethan—he knows what’s what. If you tell him, he’ll know just how to deal with it.”

Clara thought for a moment, then nodded slowly. “Okay. Got it.”

After chatting with Lilah for a bit, Clara felt way better.

At least now she knew—it wasn’t her who was the problem. It was them.
