“Simone, Something’s wrong with Xander.”

The words dropped from my lips in a shaky whisper, almost lost in the wind that swept across the hilltop. I didn’t even realize I had spoken them until Simone turned sharply to me with a look of dread stretched across her face. But I already knew. Deep in my gut, something wasn’t right.

Xander had been beside me seconds ago.. tired, yes, but steady. Now he was collapsed on the cold, uneven ground, his chest barely rising, his face pale and eerily still. The moment I saw him fall, my body moved on instinct, all exhaustion from the uphill trek forgotten. I was at his side in an instant, dropping to my knees with a desperate cry.
