Her eyes flicker several times. “You were locked up?”
I nod. “Yes. My family deemed it blasphemy for their daughter to have gotten pregnant out of wedlock. I paid for that single mistake more than anyone would have paid for a thousand grave mistakes, Julie. It was hell.”
She stays mute for a minute, then hisses something so low under her breath, “I think what they did all makes sense now. I get it now!”
I cock my head to the side, getting lost in her words. Well, she also seems lost, as if recalling something. “What makes sense?” I ask, my mind dancing to the rhythm of anxiety.
That skinny, double-headed snake! Someone tell me why I had to have such a being as my sister, and my only sibling for that matter? Actually, what was I thinking, giving me these bunch of heartless animals as my family?
