I wouldn’t lie right now, but for a moment, I felt like laughing in their faces. Why were they all acting so smug, as if I were some charity case begging for crumbs from their table? I was the heiress. *Me.* And yet here they were, each one more insufferable than the last, trying to prove they were wealthier, smarter, or more famous than me. *Ridiculous!*
