Chapter 5
Serena POV
I wanted to dismiss the thought of the man I’d seen right across the street, but the more I thought of it, the more it seemed weird. Was this one of Myles’s doing? I couldn’t help but wonder in silence.
“Hey..” I heard Becca’s voice and her steps as she made her way out of the kitchen into the living room. “What’s going on? You’re just...” She stopped when she saw Myles.
This felt so awkward, but I figured I had to introduce them.
“Myles, this is Becca, my roomie. Becca, this is...”
“Myles Voss.” Becca cut me off before I could continue. “Everyone knows who he is! Why is he here, though?” Even as she asked, her eyes flickered to the bouquet on the table and widened slightly.
“Myles is...” I hesitated for a while. “He’s my fiancé.” I finally blurted out, with the words sounding strange to my ears, though.
Becca’s jaw hung open in sheer surprise as she looked between me and Myles.
Myles extended a hand out of courtesy.
“Nice to meet you, Becca.” He muttered with his face set as if it were made out of stone. “I’m sure you guys are not intimidated by my presence.” He motioned towards the couch.
“No, no.” Becca quickly replied. “Feel free. You’re welcome.”
Myles walked over to the couch, taking off his suit jacket in the process. He carefully hung the coat over the hanger on the wall before sitting down gently.
I watched him as he moved calmly and gracefully, and for a moment, I stood there, caught in a trance, admiring his perfect body and posture and how he moved elegantly like a swan.
Cut it out, Serena! I scolded myself inwardly. Myles had made it clear that this was nothing but a contract that would last for six months or more, and then we’d sever ties and go our separate ways.
“Don’t mind my presence.” Myles looked directly at Becca. “I don’t mean to disrupt your activities.”
“Ah, yes,” Becca said and walked back to the kitchen as if she had just remembered what she was doing.
Myles didn’t say anything to me, but sat there silently and fixed his eyes intently on me. What was up with this man? Is this how all billionaires behave? I was beginning to wonder if the man sold his human feelings just to be rich and powerful.
“Aren’t you going to sit down?” He finally asked.
“You know you could just ask instead of staring, right?” I couldn’t help but snap back at him.
Myles suddenly looked surprised, like he wasn’t good at receiving such words from people, but I really didn’t give a damn.
His lips slowly twisted into a slight smirk, but not a smile that reached his eyes. I walked to the sofa opposite him and sat carefully in it.
“Now what?” I asked. “We’re just a bunch of idiots sitting opposite each other.”
“I’m taking you tomorrow to meet my family.” He announced coldly.
My heart suddenly froze at his words. This was progressing even more rapidly than I thought it would go. I didn’t expect to have Myles delivering flowers to my house and then inviting me over to see his people!
“They need to be aware that I’ve found a girl before we announce the marriage. It’ll be more believable.” He spoke calmly.
I flashed a look at the kitchen area where Becca would occasionally stick out her head to stare at us and give me an encouraging smile. She had no idea of what I was caught up in!
“Okay.” My voice came out in a small whimper, and I quickly cleared my throat. “Yeah, I suppose that’s fine.”
He nodded knowingly.
“Plus, I’ll have to take you to meet my colleagues too.”
“Colleagues?” I frowned. “How is that necessary? You don’t need to show me off to every single person you’ve met!”
“I see you didn’t read your contract that well before you signed.” He replied.
“I’m pretty sure I did.” I snapped. “And I saw nothing of that sort there!”
“Have you forgotten so soon that you are going to be a face by my side whenever I choose?” Myles calmly stated. “You have no other choice but to do exactly as we’ve agreed.”
He didn’t shout and didn’t even put any effort into raising his voice, but there was something in his voice that made me shudder.
“You seemed confused for a moment back there.” He continued casually.
“Yeah, well, I’m not thrilled about meeting your…”
“I meant earlier at the door.” He cut me off. “After I walked in.”
“Oh, that.” I shook my head. “I just thought I saw something stray.”
“What?” He prompted unceremoniously. “What did you see?”
I saw no need to hide it from him, so I opened up and told him about the biker I had seen staring at us from across the street.
I had barely finished when Myles abruptly stood to his feet and retrieved his jacket from the hanger.
“I’ll call you later.” He didn’t even wait for my reply and headed straight towards the door as Becca came hurrying out of the kitchen carrying a tray.
Myles completely ignored Becca and was out of the house with the door shutting behind him with a thud.
Becca immediately looked crestfallen as she placed the tray on the table.
“Did I do something?” She asked skeptically.
“No, Becca,” I replied. “He’s sometimes like that.”
Sometimes? I only said that to make Becca feel better. I didn’t really know every detail about Myles, but I was sure that he was always like this, cold and ruthless. He wasn’t human!
I stayed indoors all through that day because it was a weekend, but by night I stepped out to take a little stroll and maybe get some groceries at the grocery stall too.
The night was cold and so I headed to wear a thick jacket and a headwarmer with mittens to prevent myself from having frostbite.
I was already about to cross the street to the grocery stall when the headlights of a motorcycle caught me from the side.
“Serena Lancaster.” An unfamiliar voice called lowly.
