Ally's POV

I stand at the edge of the balcony, my hands gripping the cold stone rail, the air heavy with the scent of pine and impending snow.

"Ally," Elliot's voice is a soft rumble behind me, cautious yet somehow always infused with a warmth that seems to reach inside my chest and uncoil all the knots there.

I turn to face him, my heart hammering against my ribcage. In the shadowy light, his eyes glint like chips of obsidian, dark and deep. He doesn't know it yet, but he is my anchor in a sea that has been mercilessly tossing me about.
