"Oh, you girls are more than enough for me," I said.

Jess laughed sarcastically. "Modesty doesn’t suit you, John," she said.

"I’ve seen how you look at Katie," Rita added. "And how she looks at you. Get a room."

"Let’s put out the food," Kat suggested. "And get the party started."

The girls fanned out, swinging into action as they pulled out elegant platters of sushi in various spots around the open living space. The goal, I knew, was to encourage the crowd to split into smaller groups. As they laid out the dinner spread, Katie split off from the circle surrounding Juliet.
