Maddy’s POV
I looked away, my eyes landing on the lamp beside my bed. The warm glow of the light felt mocking, as though it was trying to mask the darkness that had settled in my heart.
“I…” I started, my voice barely above a whisper.
Layla sat up fully, her expression serious now. “Maddy, talk to me. Please.”
I met her gaze, and for a moment, I considered telling her everything. But the words caught in my throat, the weight of them too heavy to bear.
“I just… I need some air,” I said finally, standing up and heading for the door.
