And for the first time in what felt like forever, I felt like I was finally headed in the right direction.

I pulled up in front of Layla’s apartment, my fingers drumming impatiently on the steering wheel. 

I had called her a few minutes ago, telling her to come outside, and now I was just waiting, my heart thudding in my chest like a teenager on his first date.

I took a deep breath, leaning back in the driver’s seat as I tried to calm my nerves. It was ridiculous. 

I had faced enemies more ruthless than the devil himself, navigated life-and-death situations without so much as flinching, yet here I was, feeling anxious because I was about to see her.

But it wasn’t just about seeing her. It was about the way she made me feel. 

The way her smile could light up my darkest days, the way her laugh could ease the tension in my shoulders.
