Chapter 39
Maxine's POV
I carefully washed up, each movement sent a fresh wave of pain through my body. The cold water was a shock to my system, helping to clear the fog of despair that clung to my mind. As I dressed, I formulated a plan. I would continue to meet Tobias, but we would have to be more discreet. Liam's suspicion was growing, and I couldn't risk him finding out about our meeting. He was clearly suspecting me that was why he wanted to prove a point last night.
Later that day, I managed to find Tobias in the training grounds. He was practicing with a group of trainees, yet, he didn't look happy. He noticed me and came over, concern etched on his face.
"Maxine, are you alright? You didn't have to come." he asked, his voice low and urgent.
"I'll be fine," I replied, though the lie tasted bitter. "I didn't want to be alone, this is the only way I could forget my pain.”
