“How could you, Winston? I trusted you. My father trusted you to lead us.”
“You don’t understand Victoria. Your father was a fool. I asked him for your hand in marriage, and he refused my offer. Said that he didn’t think we were a good fit. You a know-it-all spinster, and I wasn’t good enough for you!” he shouted.
It was like a blow to her chest, but she wouldn’t crumble. “I will be a spinster over being a snake any day. What happened to you? Winston, you are greedy and driven by the lust for power. You think Julius would tell you the truth about anything?” she snapped.
“So you were listening. I wasn’t sure how much you had heard, but when I saw that bread on the ground, I knew it had to be you. Garrison doesn’t take me as a man that ask questions before killing. Do you know what getting my hands on that deed would do for me, for the movement? The crops alone are worth thousands. I can set myself up as mayor and make Julius the sheriff without anyone having to vote
