But still, doubt still in my heart. I couldn’t afford to make the wrong choice, not when so much was at stake.

“You say you want to help,” I said slowly, weighing my words. “But how do I know you aren’t just trying to save yourself? How do I know you’re not still working with Jacklin, or trying to manipulate me into some trap?”

Miraelle shook her head fiercely. “I’m not working with Jacklin! I swear, Rose, I’m not! I’ve had nothing to do with him since…since everything fell apart. I only want to stop the war. I want to end this madness.”

I glanced over at Joe, I just couldn’t stop looking at him.

His face was of concern and thoughtfulness, and I could tell he understood what I was going through.

He didn’t speak, but his eyes told me he trusted me to make the right decision.
