Rose’s POV

As we walked through the thick forest, the conversation between Joe, Elise, and me had slowed down. The heavy air of uncertainty weighed on us, and we kept our eyes focused on the path ahead. The trees were taller here, and the underbrush made it difficult to walk without stumbling.

“Do you think we’re close?” I asked, my voice breaking the silence.

Joe shrugged. “Close to what? Trouble, probably.”

Elise shot him a look. “Stop being negative. We’ll get there, wherever ‘there’ is.”
