Chapter 53

“Then make time for me. Please.” Dane shifts, so he comes up behind me once more. His voice drops to a softness that makes me feel guilty for being prickly, and I hesitate. Standing so, he towers over me yet leans down and over my left shoulder to close the gap between us. “I spent all night thinking about us, about this.” It’s a whisper that makes my skin goosebumps and my heart flip over. I can't think straight, unable to breathe with the electrifying static buzzing in the small space between us. My body reacts as it did at the counter, and I elbow him back. I need breathing space, not a raised temperature and irregular heartbeat.

“Unless you want to discuss why Tyler cut Elisa off after he acted like an idiot, then we have nothing else to talk about. You said everything last night…. I don’t need you to rephrase it or try to make it sound less asshole. I heard it loud and clear last night. We have nothing to say.”
