Chapter 100. A Little Accident?
Calista’s POV
The smoke started to thicken, and the smell in the kitchen was less of the mouth-watering aroma I’d imagined and more of a burnt, acrid stench. The smoke detector suddenly blared to life. My heart started to beat faster as I dropped the spatula, waving my hands wildly at the smoke in a futile attempt to clear it.
“Come on, come on,” I muttered, my heart racing as I fumbled to turn off the stove. The smoke detector continued its relentless screech, and I felt a flush of heat creeping up my neck—not just from the stove, but from the sheer embarrassment of my failed attempt at cooking.
What had started as a promising culinary adventure was quickly spiraling into a disaster.
I dashed to the nearest window, struggling to get it open as the smoke alarm continued to scream. The latch was stuck, and I cursed under my breath, tugging at it until the window finally gave way with a loud creak. I leaned out the window, gasping for a breath
