Layla’s POV
A hush fell over the clearing. The remaining rogues stared in stunned silence, their defiance replaced by sheer terror. Then, with a whimper, one by one, they turned tail and fled into the undergrowth.
The silver wolf stood panting, blood staining its fur, its victory seemingly complete. But as it let out a triumphant howl, the full extent of its injuries became apparent. It swayed unsteadily, its breaths shallow and ragged.
A wave of concern washed over me. “We have to help it,” I blurted out, ignoring the throbbing pain in my wrists.
Scott, however, seemed hesitant.
“It saved us,” he said slowly,
“but do we know it won’t turn on us next?”
“It won’t,” I said with a conviction I surprised even myself. “There’s something… familiar about it.”
