Mykel pressed his lips against my cheek so hard I winced. He enjoyed so much with his public display in front of his mother. I found it sweet and annoying at the same time.
“What’s wrong with you?” I rubbed the skin that was probably pink right now.
“Really? Does it hurt? You don’t mind it—”
“Okay, okay. Stop it, Mykel. We’re having breakfast.” Madelyn stacked the last waffle onto the plate and gave it to her son. “Go and prepare the table.
I hopped from the stool. “Let me help.”
“No, darling. Let him work.”
I hid my smile. Mykel seemed okay with the arrangement.
“He’s used to doing this chore. He had a lot of money that he could spend ten lifetimes, but he never complained even once.”
He returned, grabbed some cutlery from the drawer, and stocked some plates. He took the sliced fruits and the softest still steaming scrambled egg next. Once he picked up the last cup, he looked at me. “Let’s have breakfast, Mom, baby.”
