Chapter 302
Emmeline lifted her head from the bed, her face red and tear-streaked, and glared at him.
“I want to talk to you,” Emile said simply.
Without thinking, she grabbed a pillow and threw it at him. Unfortunately, it pathetically landed on the floor halfway between them.
“Leave me alone, for God’s sake!” she snapped, sitting up and wiping her face with trembling hands. “I don’t want to talk to anyone.”
Emile ignored her outburst, stopping by the edge of the bed.
“If our parents sent you to convince me to give up the divorce, don’t bother. I’m not changing my mind, even if it means standing alone.”
Emile raised a hand as though to stop her. “Neither of our parents sent me,” he said evenly. “This was my idea. I thought we could talk. You know—since we’re close in age.”
She stared at him, her expression guarded. Emile had always been kind, but something about him had changed over the years.
