“We don’t want that,” Emmeline murmured, slowly withdrawing her hand.
She placed it deliberately on her thigh, straightening her spine. The loss of contact left her fingers tingling.
The silence stretched between them, filled only by the gentle purr of the engine and the rhythmic beat of their hearts. Then Emmeline brightened suddenly, as if shaking off the melancholy. “Oh! My brother asked to accompany me today to meet the lawyer, but I refused. I might bring him next time though.”
Relief softened Zavian’s stern features, smoothing the worry lines from his forehead. “That’s actually a perfect solution,” he acknowledged, the corner of his mouth lifting slightly. “Your brother would make an excellent buffer.”
“Jealous man.” Emmeline laughed.
The imposing glass-and-steel skyscraper soon materialized before them, its mirrored walls reflecting the city like a thousand stars. The building seemed to pierce the low-hanging clouds, evidence of power and wealth.
