Chapter 313
“Emmeline Lawson, you are required to come to the station to give your statement regarding the assault case against Prosecutor Richard Maine.” The first to speak was a tall, stern-looking man.
Despite the fear clawing at her insides, Emmeline forced herself to stand tall. “I’m ready,” she said firmly.
The other officer, slightly shorter but just as serious, added, “The case is still under investigation. The charges haven’t been confirmed yet. You can come in your own car.”
Emile nodded quickly. “Thank you,” he said, his tone clipped.
The officers walked to their vehicle, which was parked in front of Emile’s gray car.
Emile opened the passenger door for Emmeline, his movements sharp with frustration.
“Get in,” he ordered.
Emmeline got into the car, her hands trembling as she clutched her coat.
She barely had time to settle before Emile slid into the driver’s seat, his jaw tight with frustration.
