Zavian’s eyelids drooped slightly with weariness, contrasting with the anger still evident in his tone. His breathing came in uneven bursts, his chest rising and falling in an irregular rhythm that belied his outward calm.
“I’ll tell you exactly why you’re like this. I’ve spoiled you with my constant indulgence.” His words were harsh yet delivered with an undertone of resignation. “You know I can’t bring myself to truly hurt you, Emmeline. Not really. That’s why you speak to me so recklessly. That’s why you deliberately push my buttons, time and again.”
Emmeline shook her head. “That’s not true. I would never—”
“Wouldn’t you?” Zavian’s expression darkened. “Think about it. Think about your actions carefully before pushing me like this.”
Emmeline wanted to deny it, to protest he was being unfair, but the words died in her throat. There was enough truth in his accusation to silence any rebuttal she might have attempted.
