Chapter 13. What Hurt Most? The Water or Humiliation?
“Hi.”
Lucien jumped.
He turned to see Amy standing at the kitchen door. Her dress was pink today, with a tiny bow tied at the waist. She smiled sweetly.
“H-Hi,” Lucien said nervously. “You… you shouldn’t be here.”
Amy giggled and stepped inside. “Why not? Are you cooking?”
“Yes, but… your mom or dad might not want you here.”
Amy tilted her head. “I just want to help.”
Lucien hesitated, then shook his head. “ohh.. thank you but, it’s not safe. There’s hot oil.”
“But I’m careful,” she insisted, stepping closer.
“No—stop, don’t come too—”
Suddenly, Amy slipped.
Her foot caught the edge of the mat near the stove, and she yelped. Lucien instinctively reached for her, and in that second—she bumped against the counter. A sharp sound rang out.
“Ouch!” Amy cried out, tears springing to her eyes.
Lucien froze.
She clutched her arm, and her cry grew louder. “It hurts!”
“What happened?” A new voice.
