Why did all the reports mention the existence of zombie-like creatures, creatures that should only appear in science fiction stories?

How could such fictional creatures exist and live in the real world?

He glanced back and forth between the files on his tablet and the glass room where the Cain family’s strange experimental creatures were being held, shaking his head in disbelief.

He thought he had been cruel enough in punishing the two traitors by hanging them there for public viewing.
