Chapter 18

As soon as Jarek had asked this question, Xavier abruptly let go of me. He didn't answer and stormed off. In all his anger and footsteps echoed down the hall.

No one said another word or expressed any emotion. The bomb had dropped that I was his mate. He probably hadn't intended to say that. That would explain his departure.

Shortly thereafter, a door was heard slamming. It reassured me that it meant that Xavier had disappeared into some room. For now, he wouldn't come too close to me. That was a small relief.

Jarek was the first to come alive and he asked, "You're his mate?"

Should I lie? What would that get me? But Xavier hadn't looked like it was on purpose to say so. Would he be mad if I admitted it? I couldn't find a correct answer to that.

Not daring to answer, I turned and went back to my room.
