The exchange was pure passion, the kind that hurt to have, that had to be had. It was the only way they knew to communicate anymore. They were being stupid and petty, punishing each other for having pasts, but they were them. Bart and CC. They’d been in love for so long that it was unfathomable that they wouldn’t be each other’s first everything. It just burned so much that in the end that wasn’t the case.
When CC got to the last button, she pulled away.
“What is this?” she asked, feeling something sticky on his shirt.
CC laughed, felt the hurt intensify.
“Of course you’ve been there already.”
“Caroline,” Bart sighed, but she was already out of his grasp.
Would she believe he really was just there to see the baby? Of course not. It wasn’t true.
“I have somewhere to be tomorrow night,” she said, her back to him as she put the nightie back on. “I have a dinner thing. Don’t wait up,” she said, closing the door behind her gently.
