Marissa looked straight ahead without turning to face her grandmother's expectant gaze. She knew what her grandmother was talking about. She had stalled for about a week after she arrived unannounced at her grandmother's door. Her grandmother had given her ample time as she tried to ignore grandma's meaningful looks. It had lasted for a week before her grandmother woke her up one day and demanded to know how she ended up with a pregnancy, who was the father, and what they intended to do about it.

Marissa had been shocked and had exclaimed, "How do you know? Maami? I have been trying to keep all the indications from you since I got here!"

Her grandmother had looked at her like she was dumb. "You believe you could keep the pregnancy a secret from a woman who had birthed and suckled six children? How naive you are. What happened, Marissa? Why exactly are you here? I mean the real reason this time, not the litany of "I missed you" that you have been giving me since you arrived.
