Hilda cried against my chest for a short moment, burying her face in the folds of my coat. She must have been exhausted. I rocked her between yelps of anguish.
“My God, Nikolai, they killed Anna and Ivan, Toshi found them in their house with their necks broken!” she blurted out, rushing over the words, tears running down her cheeks like a torrent. My stomach tightened completely. “Sebastian is very sick! I did everything I could, but one of his lungs has collapsed. I need tools, medicines…”
“Okay, calm down. We are already here, we will save him. Mika!”
My brother stuck his head in the trapdoor where Hilda had come from.
“Bring the truck, Lai! This doesn’t look good at all!”
I let my friend go ahead and got into the vehicle; I maneuvered until I left its tail behind toward the hatch to shorten the path. I threw myself into the basement with a jump that made my bones shake; my hips complained.
