The thunderous noise of the detonation made me jump to my knees; I could not suppress a scream.
I heard the bullet whiz past me, and a muffled whimper came from the werewolf’s gagged lips. Nika fell back, hitting a small table loaded with papers that fell to the floor with her, and writhed, howling for a moment, while a pool of blood opened on the white, upholstered floor. She gradually stopped moving.
I opened my mouth, but nothing but a moan came out of my throat.
Before I could find my voice to scream at the top of my lungs in horror, Ivan’s fierce and furious roar sounded like thunder throughout the wide hall:
“NIKA! NIKA!!” he shouted, desperate. With a roar infected with rage, he also bellowed at the lion, “DAMN SON OF A BITCH! UNFORTUNATE! IF YOU LOVE ME, KILL ME, DON’T HURT MY PEOPLE!”
He struggled against the chains again, beside himself, until he managed to break free.
