I knew the dangers of a mate bond more than anyone else. I also knew that Aurora had always wanted a mate. She’d spent years trying to find one, and when she did, he turned out to be a manipulative bastard who only used her. But something wasn’t adding up in this story. Yes, she’d found out that Jeffrey was her mate, and they ran away together, and he betrayed her and all that—but there was something missing. The devil was always in the details, and I couldn’t help noticing that she kept her story short and straight to the point.
“When did you leave him?” I said, my voice echoing through the walls. Right now, it was well past my morning, and I felt the fatigue setting in, but I held on—listening and looking, keeping track of everything she did: how she looked down and not at me, how she stammered and stumbled over her words.
