What she did had affected her; her power was eating her up from the inside. Even the witch couldn’t do anything—all she could do was restrain the effects.

Griel couldn’t be reached, and I feared this would all be up to me. She’d just come back to me, and I wouldn’t let her go—not now, not ever. The moment I thought she was gone had been dark. It felt like my whole world had collapsed. I hadn’t even told her I loved her. I’d spent years struggling to build up the courage to tell her my feelings, and now… now I was stuck.
