Chapter 38
Although they try not to wake me up, which I find very sweet since it is the girl who shushes Julio, the noise of rattling in the kitchen wakes me up. I wake up and greet them.
“Miss,” I caught the little girl’s attention, “I remember that you can neither eat nor drink anything...okay?”
“Yes, Don Oscar,” he answers me, smiling. “Breakfast is for you and my dad.”
She couldn’t be sweeter. Julio looks at her proudly, and it seems only natural to me. It’s impossible not to be proud of that little fighter.
We are a little embarrassed to eat breakfast in front of the little girl, who can’t join us, but she doesn’t seem to mind. She is too nervous to notice. When she leaves to go see if she has what she needs to pack, her father and I can talk quietly.
“It’s going to be fine,” I tell him.
“I hope so...” Julio is nervous and scared. But I can feel the faith he exudes: “It’s a dangerous operation and...”
“And everything will be fine,” I repeat, smili
