The Vampire King’s shoulders curved as he realized the extent of how far he had fallen into the trap the witch in front of him had set eighteen years ago. The heavy air inside the chamber thickened, pressing against his lungs like invisible smoke. The faint scent of burning sage and iron mixed together, scratching the back of his throat.
“Amber and Darach would have burnt you before you could have laid a finger on their daughter, no matter the situation you trapped them in. So you approached me predicting that I will meet my bride in Amber’s Queendom.” Ramming his hand through his hair he yanked, his breaths were coming out harsher. Sweat beaded along his temple, trickling down to his collar as the weight of old guilt gnawed at his ribs.
