“Mean? You call me mean?” Lara pushes herself to stay in the present, a long way out of get head. She sticks out her tongue, determined to tease Claire. “Making me chase you around before I can eat— that’s what I call mean.” She adds.

Carter sighs, holding his forehead with one hand. “Gracious heavens,” he mutters, shaking his head. “You are impossible, Lara.” His complaint echoes and she giggles.

They sit in a comfortable silence as Lara devours her soup. “Careful now, or you’ll choke,” Carter warns, eyeing her with concern.

“I can’t slow down. This soup is amazing!” Lara replies between gulps. “Is there more?”

“You haven’t even finished that bowl,” Carter points out, amused.

“But is there more?” She presses on, her eyes wide with anticipation.

Carter just stares on, trying to keep a straight face. “Yes, there’s more. But seriously, finish what’s on your plate first.”
